Going Above and Beyond
Well, It is the time of year when we get to spend a little more time with our families and celebrate the holidays. This does not mean that we are not still selling homes. December in Idaho is still a time when people buy homes. The reason for this article, rant, blog (whatever you want to call it) is that I increasingly keep hearing the same thing over and over from people.
First, I am not boasting, but I hear from way to many people during and after an inspection, that we inspected things that the other inspectors they used did not, or we were much more thorough in our inspection. Although this is great for us, it is a bad thing for the industry as a whole. With all the home inspection companies out there that say they follow the ASHI, NAHI or InterNachi Standards of Pratice, then why the disparity of services?
Only one reason! LAZINESS... It appears that some inspectors are just out to collect your money and not really concerned about whether you get a good quality home. The other reason may be to keep the work flowing. Too many inspectors are beholden to Realtors to keep the work coming and as such may tend to overlook items that could "kill the deal". I have affectunately become known as the deal killer by "some" of my Realtors that refer me on a consitent basis (although they actually negotiate and very few are "dead"). Because we have an understanding. I work for the buyer, period!. They know that and want that. Do I "kill deals"? NO! I just point out items such as mold in attics, water saturation in walls, defective electrical main panels. Should I as a certified InterNachi home inspector just choose to overlook these items, or maybe I should just "sugarcoat" the concern and not really tell the whole story, NO WAY!
So if some of my fellow Idaho home inspectors should choose to do business in a way that is less than honest and exagerate their experience and professionalism, then let them.. Integrity, honesty, professionalism and due diligence is what I will give my clients atleast!
